The conservative dentistry deals with the treatment of decayed teeth, the procedures for the removal of caries and those relating to the closure of the cavity resulting from the elimination of the enamel and dentin, through the use of special materials. Cavities can be superficial or deep.
In the first case we are limited to the removal of dentin and enamel affected by caries, then covering the tooth with special materials (silver amalgam or composite).
The use of silver amalgam has been replaced now by composite materials for their adhesive properties allow a less extensive carious cavity preparation compared to the use of amalgam cavity that required by the particular characteristics because they were retentive.
In deep caries there may be involvement of the pulp of the tooth, which also contains the nerve fibers, and then you have recourse to the root canal also called root canal treatment or endodontics.
The conservative for children takes the name of pediatric dentistry.
